Hema Kapoor Abrol

MBBS, MD, D(ABMM), SM

I am a proud professional of Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, where I completed my MBBS and MD in Microbiology (1976-1988). I started my career as a non-teaching faculty at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for the first four years, then continued at Safdarjung Hospital for another eight years. In mid-career, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Biotechnology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, followed by another year of post-doctoral fellowship in Molecular Microbiology at Mayo Graduate School Rochester in 2001-02.

I joined as a Manager of Virology at the Michigan Department of Community Health in 2002 and then moved to Pennsylvania to join Quest Diagnostics in 2004. In eighteen and half years of my career at Quest, I covered the journey from Technical Director to Senior Medical Director, Infectious Diseases and Immunology, to ensure timely and appropriate execution of Quest medical strategies. I was a leading medical expert for the company in the development and insights related to COVID-19 testing. I orchestrated company-wide initiatives in global markets, health equity, and industry thought leaders and payers. Additionally, I led Quest Diagnostics' strategic planning and program for Emerging Infectious Disease prevention and control. I am a skilled presenter and educator at local, regional, and national level meetings and conferences and a recipient of various awards. Most recently, in 2021, I was recognized by Dr. Anthony Fauci as a Champion of Humanistic Care alongside other esteemed healthcare team members for their immense contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, I founded HK Healthcare Consultant LLC and became an advisor in clinical diagnostics for start-up industries, medical doctors, and academia.

I am a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and specialist in Microbiology. I am an active member of the American Society of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases Society of America, European Association of the Study of the Liver, Hepatitis B Forum, American Society for Transplant (AST) European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID)  and a life member of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiology, Hospital Infection Society (HIS)-India,  Lady Hardinge Medical College Alumni Association of North America (LHMCAANA), American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).

I was born in New Delhi, India, in a family of 5 siblings (one brother and three sisters). Right from middle school, I aspired to be a physician and joined LHMC in 1976. During my internship, I married in 1981, having two daughters, a son, and four grandkids. My other interests are cooking, traveling, and networking.

As an incoming President of LHMCAANA, I look forward to leading and encouraging the board to accomplish its vision of a preeminent women's medical institution. Together, we can achieve the mission to celebrate, support, and empower women physicians in collaboration with other LHMC alum associations worldwide. I urge every hardonian in North America to become an active alum of LHMCAANA and participate in the exciting activities and opportunities this organization offers.

Life is the best teacher and I have learned a lot from my experiences.
