I joined Lady Harding Medical College as Ashima Darshana in 1958, got married & graduated in 1963. I changed my name to Ashima Darshana Mehta and did a brief surgical rotation at Safdarjung Hospital, followed by a Pediatric Residency at AIIMS. My husband, Yashbir Mehta, a physician from Amritsar Medical College, and I immigrated to Canada in 1965. I trained at the Vancouver General Hospital University of British Columbia and the University of Ottawa in Obstetrics and Gynecology. 1969 was a momentous year for me: We moved to Chicago, IL, had our first son and I, and was certified by the American Board of OBS and Gyn.
I started my practice in 1972 in the field of OBGYN. I had the distinction of being the first female OBGYN in DuPage County, IL. In 1972, our second son was born. I continued to practice in OBGYN. Finally, I combined my practice (OBGYN) and started a Medical Spa. I retired in 2016 and was delighted to connect with Hardonians in 2022 at Sudha Gupta’s home after all these years in the USA.
I became a patron of LHMCAANA to support all the junior alums of LHMC in the USA and Canada and give back to LHMC, which has given me a lot.
