Celebrating, Supporting, and Empowering Women Physicians

Kamala Ghaey

I have always been a proud hardonion since I started in 1970 and graduated with the absolutely committed and driven batch of 1974.

I moved To the USA in January 1977 as a swinging single and had a wonderful time but followed the traditional professional course and trained in Pediatrics at Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island, New York., married in 1979. Subsequently moved and settled in Chicago since 1980. Completed my pediatric Infectious disease training at UIC (while my husband attended Northwestern for his MBA). We have two children and I am finally a proud grandmother for past seven months!

I am still working at my practice (Kidz Health) with two other partners and a nurse practitioner, and still going through the tribulations of practicing medicine.

I am assistant clinical professor in Pediatrics at Nothwestern Unoversity, and on staff at Lurie Childrens hospital, Northwestern Medical Center, Inninois Masonic and St. Josephs Hospitals in Chicago.

I have served in various leadership roles in all these institutions and other organizations throughout my career including being Chairperson of Pediatrics. I believe I could not have been able to achieve these professional goals without the intense training and professional role modeling that were intuitively imparted to us at Harding where everyone demonstrated that there should be ‘No Barriers ‘ to achieve any professional and personal goals in-spite of our genders. In turn I believe I have trained students over the years at these institutions that anyone can achieve their dreams and goals.

My community (Family, friends, colleagues, students, patients) find me easily approachable and fun to be with even at my “mature age” because I believe in embracing life with full gusto and earnestness and enjoy whatever life has brought during this wonderful journey. I also believe my faith and belief in spirituality has been a great foundation for my life.

I have been a proud member of LHMCAANA since its inception and strongly believe we are never alone in achieving whatever we can without the support of friends , family and colleagues. This forum has been a great professional instrument to develop various social and professional contacts with everyone with similar backgrounds especially for newer physicians joining LHMCAANA. It gives me great pleasure belonging to a group of professionals who have been successful in all aspects of life and are not only the greatest role models to each other and for generations of colleagues coming after us. I am also extremely happy that LCMCAANA has plans for various altruistic activities as we mature into an established entity. I was delighted to sponsor a perpetual scholarship for a current student at LHMC who needs the funds fro her education and look forward to supporting the homeless shelter ‘Apna Ghar’ established by Hardonian Kanaan Tyagi in Meerut India.
