Dr. Santosh Chawla

1927-2021

A trailblazer, a true Hardonian and a doyen in her profession.

Dr Chawla graduated from Lady Hardinge Medical College in 1950 and worked as a professor in Radiology. She served as a principal of LHMC from 1977-1985.

She was the recipient of BC Roy national award for eminence as a medical teacher as well as Sir Jagdish Chandra gold medal, for best oration by Indian Radiological Association. She also served as a consultant for World Health Organization.

She was instrumental in getting a sanction for the construction of Swarna Jayanti Auditorium from our then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. She was generous in her donations towards setting up scholarships for students at Hardinge.

A few memories and fond remembrances of fellow Hardonians.

Dr Chawla was my senior and we became very good friends and colleagues when she worked as a professor in Radiology and I worked in the Medicine Department. This friendship continued as she became the principal. I enjoyed her company and will always cherish her friendship and remember her with affection. Later this continued when she became principal. I remember her as Jill.

Our Alumni today owes a lot to her for its growth while she was the principal of LHMC. She was responsible for registering our Alumni and creating a detailed directory of the graduates. We are able to get in touch with each other because of her efforts. God bless her soul and may she find peace and solace in her new abode.

Dr Chawla was responsible for the first original hand written directory of all the alumni. I remember visiting her at her residence to collect pictures for a documentary for new students entering LHMC.

At our last visit we went to collect a cheque for scholarships for students. While writing the cheque she asked if she could give more. She very generously donated three lakh rupees for Hardinge students.

She was generous with her love and affection for the younger generation and was an excellent teacher.
